Seminar
workshop:
Organization Theory and
International relations. Setting bridges and new directions for the study of
International Organizations
México,
City. 30th - 31st, October, 2013.
Background.
The role of international
organizations (IO) in global transformation processes has become more important
and relevant to other disciplines. On the one hand, their study has moved from
the idea that the State is the focus of attention, and now is directed towards
the analysis of their interactions and organizational features. For
internationalists, as organizations, these organisms have been studied since
their pathologies and endogenous dynamics, and in some cases from the
difficulties in its bureaucratic processes. Meanwhile, for organization theorists,
international organizations are seen as actors in a global world that build
their own agenda and influence the behavior of states while also become
modified by its environment.
In this sense, the interactions between literature on
international relations and organization theory focused on international
organizations as such have been growing over the past decades. From the field
of organizational analysis, a relevant theme of convergence has taken as a
point of departure studies on management and governance mechanisms within international
institutions. However, for the internationalist, the link with organization
theory has been rather weak; therefore, dialogue among these two disciplines
still requires a better integration. Accordingly, the seminar is oriented to
strength the bridge between literature on international relations and
organization theory to get deeper understating on the functioning and nature of
international organizations.
The workshop is dedicated both to exploring different
methodological approaches or innovative theoretical aspects that may serve as a
convergent point and to consider challenges for the study on international
organizations. Also, it is important to consider the governance arrangements
from inter and intra-organizational relationships of IO, as well as the
importance of international regimes from the lenses of institutional theory and
the role of IO on the globalization process. We are expected to finalize with
an innovative research agenda on international relations and organization
theory.
